Network Design and Implementation

Networks aren’t just for big business.  Small businesses and households can bring in big benefits by implementing their own internal network.  In fact, if you have more than one computer in your home or business, a good case can be made for adding a network.

A network literally connects multiple computers together.  Once implemented, you can share common printers, files, Internet connection, and other resources.

Here are a few scenarios to illustrate the point:

  • You’ve added a second computer to your home or office, but the only printer is connected to the first computer.  Adding a network for printer sharing would enable you to print from either computer as if the printer is directly connected to it.
  • In your small office, two or more people commonly need access to the same files.  Right now, you pass those files around on floppy disks, CD’s, or other media.  A constant concern is ‘which version is the ‘right’ one?’  Adding a network would allow you to share common files among multiple computers and users.  Worrying about versions would be a thing of the past.
  • Your home or business has a new high speed connection to the Internet via DSL, wireless, or Cable.  The problem is that your additional computers aren’t getting the benefit of the high speed.  A simple network would allow all your computers to share the same connection, getting the most benefit from your broadband service.

Depending on your specific circumstances, your ideal network might be a simple wired connection between two PC’s, a router feeding multiple drops in the building, or a wireless access point – enabling you to move around the building with a laptop while staying connected to the Internet.  We can explain the benefits and drawbacks of each case, so you can make an informed decision.
